What Is Facility Intelligence? A Definition
Facility intelligence unites energy, power quality, equipment health and billing in one record. See how it differs from a dashboard and what it changes.

"Facility intelligence" is a term you'll hear more and more, and like a lot of category names it risks becoming meaningless through overuse. So let's be precise about what it actually means, how it differs from the energy dashboard you may already have, and why the distinction matters for anyone responsible for a building's cost and reliability.
Start with what it's not
Most facilities that monitor anything have an energy dashboard: a tool that shows electricity consumption, maybe some charts, maybe a monthly report. That's useful, but it's a single lens on a single dimension — how much power you used. It doesn't tell you whether the power quality feeding your equipment is healthy, whether that equipment is about to fail, or how to fairly bill the tenants using it. It's one instrument on the panel.
Facility intelligence is the whole panel. It's the difference between a thermometer and a diagnosis.
A working definition
Facility intelligence is the practice of turning all the operational data a building produces into unified, actionable insight — across energy, power quality, equipment health, and cost — in one system of record.
Three words in that definition do the heavy lifting:
- Unified. Not four separate tools for four kinds of data, but one platform where they come together and correlate.
- Actionable. Not just charts to look at, but alerts, diagnoses, and decisions — the system tells you what to do, not just what happened.

Why the connection is the whole point
A dashboard shows you dimensions in isolation. Intelligence comes from the relationships between them — the insights that no single lens can produce:
- A machine drawing more power and vibrating harder is a confident failure signal that neither the energy view nor the vibration view would flag alone.
- A voltage sag correlated with a downstream equipment fault turns a mysterious trip into a diagnosable root cause.
- An off-hours energy baseline that shouldn't exist points at leaks or controls problems — visible only because energy and schedule are seen together.
- Poor power factor on a specific motor circuit connects a bill penalty to a physical asset you can go correct.

Why it has to be hardware-agnostic
There's a practical requirement hiding inside the definition. If facility intelligence means unifying all the data a building produces, the platform has to be able to read all of it — and real buildings are a mix of vendors, vintages, and protocols. A platform locked to one manufacturer's hardware can't be a true facility-intelligence system, because it can only see the slice of data its own sensors produce. A worked example
A facility runs an energy dashboard and is reasonably happy with it. Then a compressor fails unexpectedly, taking down production. In hindsight, the energy dashboard had shown the compressor's draw creeping up — but that signal meant nothing in isolation, and there was no vibration data to confirm it. On a facility-intelligence platform, the rising energy plus rising vibration would have crossed an alert threshold weeks earlier, and the failure would have been a scheduled repair. The dashboard saw a number; intelligence would have seen a machine failing. That gap is the entire value proposition.
